Ideas to help you support your child with reading at home can be found here:
It has been a gloriously sunny week to end the term.
In history, the children have enjoyed looking at a range of historical artefacts, to help them understand about life in Victorian times. The children focussed on what school life would have been like in the Victorian era, and they were amazed to hear how strict it was. It was also interesting to learn about the different subjects that were taught, with boys learning woodwork and girls doing embroidery. Overall, the children were pretty relieved they go to school now rather than the past.
We have been doing debating in our English lesson and the children have learned how to listen carefully to each other, and how to clearly express their thoughts and ideas.
In maths this week, we have been consolidating our knowledge of place value. The children have challenged themselves to prove their answers in a range of ways, and have been able to explain their mathematical thinking.
This week has been reading week, and we have been lucky enough to have visitors from Year 5, who came to read to use every day at lunch. The children listened brilliantly and had a range of thoughtful questions to ask about what they have read. A big thank you to Year 5 for providing us with such fantastic role models and for sharing interesting stories with us.
We hope you have a wonderful half term and look forward to seeing you back in June.
For sports day this year, please send your child in wearing their team colour instead of their usual Southborough PE top. A list of their team colours can be found below, thank you!

Children in Year 1 should be reading for 15 minutes a day. Parents please log your child's reading on the BOOM Reader Parent Portal or by using the BOOM reader parent app on your tablet/ mobile.
Click here for more information about how our school uses Boom Reader.
Read Write Inc books will come home each Thursday and will need to be returned the following Wednesday. Your child is able to choose a book from their class reading area on any day of the week and this can be changed when it is returned.

NSPCC online safety and mental health awareness – recommended parent and child activity for half term.
Although we typically don’t set home learning over half term (apart from continuing to read and to practise tables/bonds), we are keen to share an invaluable resource to support you as parents to help your child’s mental health and online safety awareness.
NSPCC have recently launched their ‘Positively Online Campaign’, with content supporting parents to help their children navigate the online world. It includes six top tips, two videos and a great quiz that families can take together.
The idea is to get parents talking to their children about their online wellbeing and what we can all do to feel more positive when using the internet. Class teachers will follow up on this during class online safety and PSHE lessons in Term 6.
Links to resources, tips and the quiz can be found here: NSPCC online wellbeing and positivity
The family online quiz can be found here.
Children have recently been given a copy of their Music Knowledge Organiser; you can also download a PDF copy (attached).
To compliment class work and further develop musical knowledge and skills, children should be discussing their Knowledge Organiser at home and talking about the music they are listening to in school and at home. Miss Garrioch (our specialist music teacher) suggests that across the week children spend about 30 minutes on this – that could be just 5 minutes a day listening to a song on the car radio and using musical vocabulary to comment on pitch, rhythm and the genre of music. Knowledge Organisers summarise key music curriculum information including, musical terms, technical definitions as well as topic specific content.
Please ask your child what they’re learning about this week in music and help them remember 1 or 2 related facts from the Knowledge Organiser. You could turn this into a family game, quizzing each other on what you’ve discussed. Support at home will be a massive help and aid children’s learning and musical knowledge.
At the start of each music lesson, children will share what they’ve discussed at home and will talk about their favourite song or piece of music and make links to their musical knowledge.
At the end of each short term there will be quizzes (based on the Knowledge Organiser) in class as part of our ongoing assessment in music.
