Lots of the group taste tested the cress they grew, in egg sandwiches. Then we looked at some work by inspiring garden designers and then started designing our own ideal gardens.
More daffodil bulbs were planted, onion bulbs and planters watered but the main event was making bird feeders. We talked about the balance of nature for a healthy garden.
The children planted the broad beans and the rest of the garlic. The broad beens were planted in pots ready to plant on. Cress seeds were sown so that we can watch germination over the next week.
This week, the children started planting onions outside the kitchen, in the weeks to come there will be garlic and broad beans added. Daffodils were also planted but the discovery of some extremely long worms detracted from the job in hand!
This week, the children have made bottle compost. They will keep the compost at school to observe the changes and use it in the spring. The children also began to prepare the ground for daffodil bulbs that they will soon be planting.
This week, the children learned how to make new house plants by division. The spider plants are easy to care for at home, simply allow the soil to become dry and then water. Pot on once the plant begins to outgrow the pot it is in.
The children emptied seed pods from wild flowers, such as poppies and cornflowers and made seed packets to take home. These can be sown in autumn or spring on a clear patch of ground.
