Basketball

Basketball Success at Leigh Academy.

On Tuesday 28th November the Year 5 and 6 Mixed Basketball team took part in the LAPSSP Basketball competition. There were 16 teams taking part in this event with over 14 schools participating.

The team consisted of a mix of year 5 and 6 pupils and we were drawn in group 2 against St John’s A, Sussex Road, and Claremont B. We started incredibly well against Claremont forging our way to a 12-0 win with some excellent passing play. We then played Sussex Road who moved the ball really well and despite a close game we lost 6-13. St Johns A in the final game were again a very close match with a number of superb long-range shots from Riley and Lily. Despite our best efforts, we lost 3-7 but still managed a brilliant 2nd place in our group.

We then played the runner ups from the other three groups St Margaret’s, Claremont A and Slade A. Against Claremont A we played arguably our best game, constantly pressing with some brilliant passing from Jenson, Isabelle and Pascal to win 10-3. We then played Slade A where Callum, Daisy and Margot had strong games making some excellent runs and keeping good shape. We won 5-4 in a very close finish! Finally, we played St Margaret’s who were arguably the strongest team, despite some brilliant defensive play from Henry and Isabella they proved too strong and we lost 10-4.

Overall, we finished 6th team from 16 teams similar to last year and played with great commitment and determination. Well done everyone’.

The team were: Riley, Henry, Callum, Jenson, Pascal, Isabelle, Daisy, Margot, Isabella and Lily.

Southborough Shine at Basketball

The Southborough mixed Basketball team produced some of their best performance of the year against 16 very competitive schools. In our group we had Woodlands, Slade A and Hildenborough. After a very close game against Woodland where we drew 10-10 Southborough really started to move the ball with fluency. We had some fantastic shots from Louis, Max and Isabella which saw the team win against Hildenborough 9-1. In the toughest game of the day against Slade A we raised our game further only narrowly losing out 6-4 to a very strong team. As runners up in our group we played the runners up from the other three groups being Claremont, Speldhurst and Bishops Down.

The speed and intensity of these games increased with Hattie and Bella moving the ball brilliantly. Jenson used his strength to great effect scoring some excellent baskets against Bishops Down where we won 5-1. Against Speldhurst Louis and Piers opened the scoring and we kept the lead to a decisive 9-5 finish before playing finally Claremont. Claremont with a very strong team defended really well and despite opportunities from Nancy, Riley and Isabella, Claremont managed to win 6-0. The team played with great sportsmanship and can be proud of their performances in a very challenging competition.
