This week in Devon 5

Week beginning Monday 12th October

It has been a fantastic week in Year 5, with the children working hard and showing growing independence and confidence in their learning. They have been developing new skills across the curriculum and rising to the challenges of being in Upper School.

Our English lessons have centred on diary entry writing, with the children stepping into the shoes of Danny Chung from Danny Chung Does Not Do Maths. Writing in the first person and past tense, they have been using precise and emotive language to convey Danny’s experiences, thoughts and feelings. We have explored how carefully chosen words can help a reader connect with a character and understand their emotions.

In maths, we have begun exploring multiples, factors, common multiples and common factors. The children have been investigating the relationships between numbers, spotting patterns and working systematically to solve problems.

Our history learning has taken us further into the Shang Dynasty, where we have discovered more about Bronze Age craftsmanship. The children have explored how bronze was made and used, looking particularly at ritual vessels and other important objects. This has given us a fascinating insight into the beliefs, skills and lives of people in ancient China thousands of years ago.

Meanwhile, in geography, we have been investigating the world’s biomes. We have considered how climate affects the plants and animals that live in different environments and discussed how living things adapt to survive in their surroundings.

During PSHE, our focus has been on assertiveness and setting safe boundaries in friendships. Through our discussions, the children have been considering how to express their feelings clearly, communicate respectfully and feel confident saying no when something does not feel right. Developing these skills is essential for building healthy friendships and ensuring everyone feels safe and respected.

On Thursdays, the children continue to enjoy PE with Mr Levett, developing their fitness and practising their sporting skills. Please remember to keep PE kits in school every day in case of any timetable changes.
