SUMMER TERM 2026: DISCOVERY CENTRE ART AND READING PROJECT

Pupils have been very busy this term creating stunning new artwork to adorn the walls and ceiling of the Discovery Centre. 

Children have worked with great enthusiasm to create artworks based on their favourite stories from each of the sections in the DC. Read on to find out what each year group has been making and creating... 

YR Joy of Reading: Maybe by Chris Haughton 

Our clever little makers in YR have thoroughly enjoyed making mini ‘Maybe’ bookmarks in response to Chris Haughtons charming, illustrated story. The children, inspired by Chris’s style, used bold colours to create collages of the monkeys found in the book. The bookmarks will be displayed as a suspended artwork in the Discovery Centre for all to enjoy. 

Y1 Our Universe: Professor Astro Cat’s Frontiers of Space by Dominic Walliman. 

Y1 have recreated the illustrations from the story Astro Cat using a combination of collage and printing. The children created their own painted papers and then used these to collage the characters from the book. Y1 children particularly looked at the shapes and colours of the funny space characters, using a limited colour palette to capture the retro aesthetic of the 1960's. They created further artworks using printing techniques, developing skills they learnt earlier in the year. 

Y2 Globalisation: To the Other Side by Erika Meza 

Y2 have created Mexican artworks inspired by the story To The Other Side. Our Y2 children painted, drew and cut out whimsical shapes using pinks, oranges and yellows to form part of a large wall mural. The children also learnt how to design and make traditional Mexican papel picado. If you happen to visit Carnaby Street, London this Summer, you will find a papel picado installation created for the TATE’s Frida Kahlo exhibition.  

Y2 children also created stunning 3D masks in response to the illustrations in the story. The masks have a distinctive Mexican feel, reflecting Mexican craft and storytelling heritage. Y2 loved getting messy making these! 

Y3 Environment: The Search for Giant Arctic Jellyfish by Chloe Savage 

Y3 have created beautiful mixed media collages using a combination of watercolour and oil pastel to create ocean backgrounds inspired by the story The Search for Giant Arctic Jellyfish. 

Y3 created their own painted papers which they used to collage the body and the tentacles of their jellyfish. Each stunning jellyfish had its own unique personality! These jellyfish collages complement Y6's 3D hanging jellyfish.  

Y4 The Joy of Reading: Magicalia by Jennifer Bell 

Y4 explored the magical creatures described in Magicalia, using their imagination to design and illustrate their own magical creatures. They experimented with different drawing and painting techniques before creating large colourful pen and ink artworks. These stunning drawings have been printed onto transparent paper and then glued onto large paper lanterns to create a magical corner of the Discovery Centre. In Discovery Centre sessions, they focused on the 'magicores' and the inspiration behind their creation. Each magicore is summoned by a core emotion, so they had to think about integrating their powers into their identities. 

Y5 STEM: The Girl Who Drew Butterflies: How Maria Merian’s Art Changed Science by Joyce Sidman 

Y5 have created stunning mixed media artworks inspired by the scientific work of etymologist Maria Merian.  Maria was an artist and scientist who lived in the 1600’s. She was so enthralled by nature and the secret lives of bugs, that she was the first to discover metamorphosis! 

Y5 created mixed media collaged butterflies and caterpillars as well as 3D artworks to tell Maria’s story. These fabulous creations bring the STEM section of our DC to life, showcasing how art and science go hand in hand. 

Y6 History: Loki: A Bad God’s Guide to Being Good by Louie Stowell 

Y6 explored mythological Norse creatures and considered why these characters have remained important in storytelling for centuries. They developed their drawing skills through observational and imaginative sketching, simplifying their designs into silhouettes, creating relief printing blocks which they used to print onto fabric. The combination of all the children’s printed designs have created a dramatic norse-inspired wall hanging.

SPRING TERM 2026

Year 3 Spring Term 4 2026

DT Unit: Greenhouse

This project teaches children about the purpose, structure and design features of greenhouses, and compares the work of two significant greenhouse designers. They learn techniques to strengthen structures and use tools safely. They use their learning to design and construct a mini greenhouse.

Year 4 Spring Term 4 2026

Art Unit: Animals in Art

This project teaches children about the historical and cultural portrayal of animals in art. They study the visual qualities of animals through sketching, printmaking and clay modelling.

Year 5 Spring Term 4 2026

Art Unit: Line, Light and Shadows

This project teaches children about the visual qualities of line, light and shadow. They explore the work of Pablo Picasso and Rembrandt and are introduced to a range of shading techniques. They take black and white photographs and use pencil, pen and ink wash to reimagine their photographs in a shaded drawing.

Year 6 Spring Term 4 2026

Art Unit: Make Do and Mend

This project teaches children a range of simple sewing stitches, including ways of recycling and repurposing old clothes and materials to make decorative fabric bowls. To be continued next term!

SPRING TERM 3 2026

Year 3 Spring Term 3 2026

Art Unit: Prehistoric Pots

This project teaches children about Bell Beaker pottery. It allows the children to explore different clay techniques, which they use to make and decorate a Bell Beaker-style pot.

Year 4 Spring Term 3 2026

Art Unit: Vista

This project teaches children about the techniques that artists use when composing landscape images, such as colour and atmosphere.

Year 5 Spring Term 3 2026

Art Unit: Mixed Media

This project teaches children about paper crafts, collage techniques, including paper, fabric, mixed media and photo collage. They use their learning to create a final piece of small-scale, mixed media collage.

Year 6 Spring Term 3 2026

Art Unit: Environmental Artists

This project teaches children about the genre of environmental art. They study how artists create artwork that addresses social and political issues related to the natural and urban environment. Children work collaboratively to create artwork with an environmental message.

AUTUMN TERM 2 2025 

Year 3 Autumn Term 2 2025

DT Unit: Making it Move

This project teaches children about cam mechanisms. They experiment with different shaped cams before designing, making and evaluating an automated toy.

Year 4 Autumn Term 2 2025

DT Unit: Functional and Fancy Fabrics

This project teaches children about home furnishings and the significant designer William Morris. They learn techniques for decorating fabric, including block printing and embroidery and use them to design and make a fabric sample.

Year 5 Autumn Term 2 2025 

DT Unit: Moving Mechanisms

This project teaches children about pneumatic systems. They experiment with pneumatics before designing, making and evaluating a pneumatic creature with opening and closing jaws.

Year 6 Autumn Term 2 2025 

DT Unit: Engineer

This project teaches children about remarkable engineers and significant bridges, learning to identify features, such as beams, arches and trusses. They complete a bridge-building engineering challenge to create a bridge prototype.

AUTUMN TERM 1 2025 

Year 3 Autumn Term 1 2025

ART Unit: Contrast and Compliment

This project teaches children about colour theory by studying the colour wheel and colour mixing. It includes an exploration of tertiary colours, warm and cool colours, complementary colours and analogous colours, and how artists use colour in their artwork.

Year 4 Autumn Term 1 2025

DT Unit: Warp and Weft

This project teaches children about the artform of weaving and how it has developed over time, including the materials and techniques required to create woven patterns and products. The children made their own flower looms from paper plates and made these beautiful weavings.

Year 5 Autumn Term 1 2025 

ART Unit: Tints, Tones and Shades

This project teaches children about colour theory by studying the colour wheel and exploring mixing tints, shades and tones. They learn about significant landscape artworks and features of landscapes before using this knowledge to create winter landscape paintings and drawings.

Year 6 Autumn Term 1 2025 

ART Unit: Trailblazers and Barrier Breakers

This project teaches children about significant black artists and their work, and provides opportunities to analyse and create artwork inspired by them.
