This week in Cumbria 5

Week beginning Wednesday 2nd September

Welcome to Cumbria 5!

We have had a good start to term 1, getting to know your children and finding out their preferred learning styles and interests.  The children will have found expectations have risen now that they are in Year 5 and in the Upper School - more responsibilities, showing younger children how to behave, showing greater courtesy and respect to each other and the adults they work with.  Learning is also becoming more challenging as we learn new content and practise skills already learnt in previous years.

We're off to church next Tuesday (29th September) for our annual RE lesson with Jamie.  We have been learning about different types of worship asking the question 'what helps Christians to worship God?'  We will be exploring the different features of Christ Church in our RE lesson as well as thinking about the 'omni' words and how Christians feel about God being omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent and omnibenevolent.

In English we have been getting to know Danny Chang and his grandmother.  Learning about how different people live in different ways to ourselves always raises questions and encourages discussions about our own home routines.  Danny took Nai Nai to Boules Club this week so we had a go playing Boules amid lots of laughter, frustration and sportsmanship.  Next week we all go to the Bingo!

We have completed our first maths unit about place value and will be starting a unit about addition and subtraction.  Most of this will be practicing skills already learnt but being able to become more efficient in our problem solving techniques.

In history, the children have begun learning about the Shang Dynasty, learning out how people today know about a civilisation from over 4000 years ago and different sources of evidence that help archaeologists build up a picture of life.

In geography they have been learning about contour lines on maps and identify hills and valleys using maps and photographs.

In PE there has been a lot of fitness training, getting the children fitter again after the summer holiday.  Netball and basketball skills are being practiced as well as small team games.

PE is on a  Thursday with Mr Levett - please ensure PE kits are in school everyday just in case there are timetable changes.

We look forward to meeting parents at the Meet the Teacher pop in on Wednesday 16th September or on the playground after school.
