Mixed Football

'Road to Wembley' at the Tonbridge Angels Football Club- Thursday 21st November

It was certainly a cold and frosty morning with the temperature hovering around zero when we arrived at the Tonbridge Angels Football club. Southborough’s mixed football team were drawn in group C and were excited to play against some very good opponents. We were drawn against Langton Green, Invicta, Bishops Chavasse, Ide Hill City and St Margaret’s Clitheroe.

We started off against Langton who proved to be very strong and despite some fantastic goal keeping from Ben we eventually lost 2-0. We then started to find our form, playing some good football against Invicta and Ide Hill but were unfortunate not to find the back of the net, drawing both games. Bishops Chavasse was an extremely close game but we narrowly lost in the final few minutes. We then played St Margaret Clitheroe who hadn’t lost a game, we started really well with Lola and Leo making some excellent runs. Bay, Henry and Finn battled well in defense with Maya and Evie looked strong on the ball. Southborough managed to hold on to a 0-0 draw. A great result.

We ended the group stages mid table and, in the afternoon, we played Ide Hill (United) in the play off’s and scored 3 brilliant goals from Finn, Bay and Henry. We took confidence from this and saved our best game until last against St Augustine’s where we won 1-0 with another excellent finish from Finn. It could have been two with Leo narrowly missing the post.

The pupils really enjoyed the day supported by a number of parents and despite the cold all the games were played in excellent spirit. The overall winners were Woodlands school who will now advance to round 2 against teams from the South of England.
