Tunbridge Wells Swimming Gala- Thursday 27th June 2024
What an action-packed evening of top-class swimming at Tunbridge Wells Swimming pool last Thursday. Southborough took a team of 14 pupils across years 5 and 6 to this prestigious swimming event in the calendar. The team had trained in June in preparation for the annual competition and all their hard work had clearly paid off. This year twelve Tunbridge Wells schools were represented at the gala with a very high standard of competition with a number of club and county swimmers taking part for their Schools.
Southborough had some brilliant performance with Clara achieving a gold medal in the freestyle race showing wonderful technique and speed in the water. Joseph showed incredible strength to win gold in the individual year 5 breastroke pushing away in the final few metres to win the boys race. We had notable performances from Daisy, winning a silver medal in the year 5 girls backstroke with Arabella and Margot producing fine performance in both the year 6 girls freestyle and year 5 breaststroke events. Molly battled away in the diving competition to produce a superb Bronze medal. Well done to everyone in the squad who took part in the gala.
The Southborough results are posted below and the overall Schools results are included underneath our individual results.
Thank you to Mrs Johnson for supporting the team during the evening and helping to organise the races and for parents with your support as spectators throughout the evening.

Southborough took a strong team of 24 pupils across years 5 and 6 to this prestigious swimming event in the calendar. The team had been training throughout January and February in preparation for the annual competition and all their hard work had clearly paid off. This year fourteen Tunbridge Wells schools were represented at the gala with a very high standard of competition with a number of club and county swimmers taking part for their Schools.
Southborough had some brilliant performances with Elsie achieving two personal bests in the Backstroke and Open heat before going on to break the existing Gala Backstroke record of 17.25 seconds and winning the Open final. Irene in the individual Breastroke produced a sensational swim to push away in the final few metres to win the year 6 girls Breastroke. We had notable performances in the Boys and Girls Freestyle event where we finished 3rd along with strong swims from Samuel, Jonathan P and Edward who also finished 3rd in very competitive races.
Overall we finished 4th in the larger schools competition only one point behind St James in 3rd place and close to Claremont and St Johns in 2nd place. Swimming continues to go from strength to strength with some great results during year 6 curriculum practice in Term 1 and 2. A number of our students compete out of school at club level and we continue to have some excellent results. In Term 3 we see Year 5 practice their swimming during curriculum time. Here is Elsie in Year 6 winning 12 medals at her club championships.
