Maths

We have been finishing our unit on addition and subtraction. This week, we focused on subtraction without exchanging and subtraction involving more than one exchange. The children have found some of these methods quite challenging, so we would really appreciate any extra practice you can do at home to help build their confidence.

English

We have finished reading our class book, The King Who Banned the Dark, and the children have written their own book reviews, sharing their thoughts and opinions about the story. We have also enjoyed several woodland walks, using the natural surroundings to inspire our descriptive writing. Our focus has been on using different types of figurative language, including:

• Similes – comparing two things using 'like' or 'as', e.g. "The leaves danced like butterflies in the wind."

• Metaphors – describing something as if it is something else, e.g. "The forest was a sea of green."

• Personification – giving human qualities to non-human things, e.g. "The trees whispered in the breeze."

• Onomatopoeia – words that imitate sounds, e.g. "The leaves crunched beneath our feet."

The children have been working hard to identify the differences between these language devices and use them effectively to bring their writing to life!

Science

We carried out a fun investigation into our teeth! The children used pieces of apple to explore the different jobs our teeth do, from biting and tearing to chewing and grinding. We also counted our teeth and discussed why we have different types. Alongside this, we learnt about the three main layers of a tooth: enamel, the hard outer layer that protects the tooth; dentine, the layer underneath the enamel; and pulp, the soft inner part containing nerves and blood vessels.

History

We have been learning about Sutton Hoo, an important Anglo-Saxon archaeological site in Suffolk. The children discovered the incredible ship burial and explored some of the fascinating treasures found there, including the famous helmet, jewellery and weapons. We discussed what these discoveries tell us about Anglo-Saxon life, wealth, craftsmanship and beliefs.

PE will take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Thank you for ensuring that PE kits were in school each day, which helped us manage any timetable changes.
