Lunchtime Personal Best Challenge

This term’s Personal Best Challenges

Why?

The Chief Medical Officers (CMO) recommends that children undertake the following physical activity each week for general health:

  • At least 60 mins of moderate intensity physical activity on average per day across the week (e.g. walking, cycling, scooting, playground activities, dancing)
  • Take part in a variety of types and intensities of physical activity across the week to develop movement skills, muscles and bones (e.g. running, climbing, skipping with a rope, gymnastics, football, tennis, dance, press ups/sit ups or similar)
  • Reduce the time spent sitting or lying down and break up long periods of not moving with some activity. Aim to spread activity throughout the day (e.g. don’t sit for long periods in lessons)

The recommendation is for 30 minutes at school and 30 minutes at home. At Southborough we have introduced the personal best challenge as one of the ways for children in our school to hit this target.

What?

On each of our three playgrounds pupils have the opportunity to increase their own personal active minutes by carrying out as many repetitions of a particular sporting movement as they can.

The children achieve a Bronze, Silver or Gold standard in each of the different activities being run by the lunchtime staff and sports leaders. The number of repetitions required for each standard changes depending on the weekly challenge and is shared by the sports leaders and lunchtime staff on the playground.

Each personal best challenge is recommended by the Youth Sports Trust and is specifically chosen to develop the children’s fundamental core sport skills:

  • Coordination
  • Balance
  • Speed
  • Agility
  • Striking & fielding
  • Stamina

We celebrate the top scorers in every year group of each weekly personal best challenge in our weekly collective worship, on our website and on our sports board.

 Lunchtime Personal Best Challenge

Over the course of the Academic Year 2024-2025 we will be running a series of weekly Personal Best Challenges for children in different classes on each of the three playgrounds. Pupils will have the opportunity to take part and develop their skills by trying to achieve the Bronze, Silver or Gold standards in each of the different activities being run by the lunchtime staff and sports leaders each week. Classes will have the opportunity to take part in the challenge on their designated day each week and will receive points for their House Continent by achieving the 3 different standards on the lead up to Sports Day.

Here are a list of the different weekly activities and what the pupils are aiming to achieve in their challenge.
