In Year 6, art and science will be taught in 2-hour blocks and are rotated with each other each week.

This week in Suffolk 6

Week beginning Monday 25th November

It’s been another wonderful – albeit chilly - week in Year 6. In English, we continued reading our book ‘Running on Empty’, can you remember what we have read so far in the story? This week the children have been focussing on writing instructional texts about how to become the fastest runner in the world. We started by sharing some ideas about why someone would want this, can you remember your reasons? We then carried out some research as to how we can improve our running skills, taking into account a variety of different elements including: clothing, diet, technique, training type, mindset and many others. Towards the latter end of the week, we turned our attentions to narrative writing, this time focussing on suspense. First, we discussed a pivotal moment in our book where AJ had to make a decision, can you remember what his decision was about? We discussed and carried out a conscience alley to share our ideas, and then we planned our narratives based upon this moment in the story.

In Science, the children learned how our choices have an impact on the way our bodies work. In particular, we looked at diet, alcohol, smoking and drugs and how these elements can have a long-lasting impact on our health. We started by looking at diet, discussing the notion of a balanced diet using the Eatwell Guide. The children were tasked with looking at a variety of foods and deciding whether these were healthy or unhealthy based on their nutritional values. We discussed how diet, particularly those high in salt, sugar and fat, can be a contributing factor to someone developing health issues as they age. We moved onto alcohol, smoking and drugs and the children were tasked with writing down everything they already knew about these elements. Using BBC Bitesize and NHS webpages, we discussed the impact of these elements on an individual’s health. What can you remember from the lesson?

This week we continued our rehearsals for the nativity – very exciting! Your child should have come home with a letter from school outlining their role in the nativity and what they will be required to wear. Please can costumes be sent in to school by Tuesday 3rd December for our dress rehearsal. If you have any questions regarding this or did not receive the letter, please let us know asap.

Finally, the cold weather is clearly here to stay now, so it would be a great idea to encourage your children to bring a jumper and coat to school with them for breaktimes and also for the walk down to swimming on a Tuesday.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Latty, Miss Wright and Ms Glanfield.

Reading

We recommend children in Year 6 children read for at least 15 minutes a day.

Please ensure you hear your child read regularly and record on Boom Reader using the parent app on your tablet/mobile no more than once a week:

boomreader.co.uk/parents

Some helpful questions to ask the children and check their understanding as they read have been pasted below.

Children should bring their Accelerated Reading book to and from school each day. When they have finished reading their current book, children are asked to complete a quiz before choosing the next one:

Please note: pupil login details have changed slightly due to an upgrade that has taken place on the Accelerated Reader platform. Pupil login details (user name and password) should now be enter in all lower case (no capital letters at all). These login details are used each time your child quizzes a school reading book which carries an accelerated reading quiz code.
