The Year 3 Team

Term 3 – Week 3 (WB 19/1/26)

The children of Leicestershire continue to work very hard in and out of class. They constantly amaze us and their effort and ingenuity.

In English, we have continued reading our class novel The Ice Palace, using it as a stimulus for our writing. The children have been tasked this week to try harder at writing at length whilst keeping the same quality. They have written a letter to their parents as Ivan (the protagonist in our book) to their Mum and Dad convincing them why he had to leave to save his brother. Some were very emotional.

In Maths, the children have been studiously showing their Maths skills in a variety of forms. They have worked incredibly hard to showcase their Maths ability. They should be very proud of themselves.

In Science, the children have been learning about frictional forces. We conducted an experiment on a variety of materials to see which slows a toy car or a ball the most. We will discuss this further next week.

On Friday last week, children sampled some link learning - this was work directed by them about work they had learned that week. We had painting, further experiments and looking more at fossils. It was great seeing the children's ideas.

Please see below for the new home learning tasks for this term. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. We hope you enjoy sharing and exploring these learning activities with your child at home.

Finally, please continue to support your child with regular reading at home and by updating their Boom Reader account whenever possible. Your support makes a real difference to their confidence and progress. Please also ensure your child brings their reading book into school every day. Please also follow this link https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/6704864 to access quizzes when your child finishes a book. They will know their login details for this.

Finally, we are continuing to learn our times tables with some fun songs! Practising for just 15 minutes a week on the recommended website will make a huge difference in building strong multiplication and division skills, which are essential throughout Key Stage 2 and beyond. We have been learning our eight timetables - here is our new song for you to practise at home -

Eight Times Table Song (Cover of All About That Bass by Meghan Trainor)

Investigative Topic Tasks:

Think about our text ‘The Ice Palace’.

Research somewhere in the world that is always icy. What are the challenges of living in these conditions? What are the positives? Would you like to live there and why?

Research some things that are made of the 3 different types of rock. What are they used for? How does the material work well for this use?

Igneous: granite, obsidean

Metamorphic: marble, slate

Sedimentary: chalk, limestone.

Experiment with different forces: pull, push, twist etc.

Find a way to demonstrate the force, record with photos or drawings.

All of the children will have an investigative topic-linked learning task to complete, which is rotated over a three-week cycle. The children will focus on one of their three current foundation subjects each week.
To support this, the children are split into 3 groups, which you can see below.
This will be set on a Thursday and due by the following Tuesday.
In class on a Tuesday or Wednesday, the children will then share the outcomes of their research, and the knowledge they have retrieved, within their own group.
