Term 4 Week 4

WB: 16.03.26

With sunny weather expected, please could children bring a named sunhat to wear at breaktimes to help protect them from the sun. We would also kindly ask that suncream is applied before school each morning.

This week in English, we are writing information leaflets all about how to care for Sea Monkeys. As part of this, the children will be learning how to explain instructions clearly, including how to keep Sea Monkeys healthy by giving them the right food, clean water, and a safe environment. In our class text, the Sea Monkeys are not always very well behaved, so we will also be thinking creatively about how to “train” them to be kinder and more helpful!

In Maths, we have started a new unit on mass and capacity. The children have been learning how to read scales carefully, order different masses, and compare which objects are heavier or lighter. We have also started adding and subtracting masses, which has been a little more challenging. This is especially tricky when the scales do not go up in ones, but instead in intervals such as 50g or 100g, as it requires the children to count in steps and think more carefully about the values shown. We are encouraging them to take their time, use practical resources where possible, and explain their thinking, which is really helping to build their confidence and understanding.

In Science, we have been learning about which metals are magnetic. The children have discovered that iron, cobalt, and nickel are naturally magnetic, as well as steel, which is a man-made metal that contains iron. After lots of practical activities, we focused more on using our critical thinking to predict and explain why certain materials are magnetic and others are not. The children have been encouraged to observe carefully, record their findings, and look for patterns, helping them to develop both their scientific reasoning and their ability to explain their ideas clearly. This has been a great way for them to apply what they have learned and think like young scientists.

Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support with your child’s learning – it really does make a difference and is greatly appreciated.
