Lunchtime Personal Best Challenge

This term’s Personal Best Challenges

Why?

The Chief Medical Officers (CMO) recommends that children undertake the following physical activity each week for general health:

  • At least 60 mins of moderate intensity physical activity on average per day across the week (e.g. walking, cycling, scooting, playground activities, dancing)
  • Take part in a variety of types and intensities of physical activity across the week to develop movement skills, muscles and bones (e.g. running, climbing, skipping with a rope, gymnastics, football, tennis, dance, press ups/sit ups or similar)
  • Reduce the time spent sitting or lying down and break up long periods of not moving with some activity. Aim to spread activity throughout the day (e.g. don’t sit for long periods in lessons)

The recommendation is for 30 minutes at school and 30 minutes at home. At Southborough we have introduced the personal best challenge as one of the ways for children in our school to hit this target.

What?

On each of our three playgrounds pupils have the opportunity to increase their own personal active minutes by carrying out as many repetitions of a particular sporting movement as they can.

The children achieve a Bronze, Silver or Gold standard in each of the different activities being run by the lunchtime staff and sports leaders. The number of repetitions required for each standard changes depending on the weekly challenge and is shared by the sports leaders and lunchtime staff on the playground.

Each personal best challenge is recommended by the Youth Sports Trust and is specifically chosen to develop the children’s fundamental core sport skills:

  • Coordination
  • Balance
  • Speed
  • Agility
  • Striking & fielding
  • Stamina

We celebrate the top scorers in every year group of each weekly personal best challenge in our weekly collective worship, on our website and on our sports board.

 Lunchtime Personal Best Challenge

Over the course of 2024 we will be running a series of weekly Personal Best Challenges for children in different classes on each of the three playgrounds. Pupils will have the opportunity to take part and develop their skills by trying to achieve the Bronze, Silver or Gold standards in each of the different activities being run by the lunchtime staff and sports leaders each week. Classes will have the opportunity to take part in the challenge on their designated day each week and will receive points for their House Continent by achieving the 3 different standards on the lead up to Sports Day.

Here are a list of the different weekly activities and what the pupils are aiming to achieve in their challenge.

Week 8 'Bean Bag Challenge' Top Scorers

Another fantastic week of results in week 8 and this week we welcome the beginning of our count down to Sports Day with our pupils scoring points for their House Sports Day Continent each week by taking part in the 'Personal Best Challenge'. Each week the continent points will accumulate depending on scores across the school in each year group from the 'Personal Best Challenge' in the build up to Sport Day.

Week 7- 'Around the World Challenge'- Top Scorers

Well done to Harley H in Year 5 who scored a brilliant 70 at the end of last terms 'Around the World Challenge'. He showed great speed and control with a ball to achieve such a brilliant score. We look forward to seeing the results of the challenges in Term 5.

Week 6- 'Figure of Eight Challenge' Top Scorers

We've had another fantastic week with the 'Figure of Eight Challenge'. Our top scorer this week was Mylo with a fantastic 164 followed closely by Frank scoring 162. Molly showed excellent consistency with 110 but all the pupils show exceptional control and balance to complete the task at such speed. It great to see all the pupils using a range of equipment to complete this task and showcase their skills and talents.

Week 5- 'Obstacle Challenge'-Top Scorers

Well done to all the children who took part in the Obstacle Challenge this week. It was certainly a test of fitness, agility and endurance. We had some superb achievements across the year groups and quite a range of scores! Mylo in year 3 produced the top score of the week with a fantastic 164 just ahead of Frank in year 6 who was close behind with 162. Well done to all the pupils that took part.

Week  4- 'Tap Up Tennis Challenge- Top Scorers

We've had another superb week of scores in the week 4 'Tap Up Tennis' where Lana, Jasmin, Daisy and Jacob all scored over 180 taps in a minute...that's over 3 a second! It was great to see so many of our children in reception and the younger year groups taking part and doing their very best. Well done to all the pupils that took part this week.

Week 3- Speed Bounce Challenge- Top Scorers

Another great set of results this week in the very challenging Speed Bounce Challenge. Hannah B in Year 4 produced the best set of results of the week with a staggering 196 steps in a minute.....that's nearly two a second! Well done to everybody that took part and I look forward to seeing the results of the 'Tap Up Tennis' this week.

Week 2 - Step up Challenge- Top Scorers

Another set of fantastic results this week across the school, despite the weather being challenging during the week, most pupils took the opportunity to take part and record either a Bronze, Silver or Gold standard score with Jacob S scoring the highest number of steps at 78 steps in a minute. Well done to everyone that took part and achieved a personal best.

Week 1-  Super Slalom Run- Tops Scorers

Well done to all our top scorers from Reception to Year 6 who have been highlighted on our PE board. We also congratulate our pupils who have achieved a Bronze, Silver or Gold standard score in the Super Slalom Run in Week 1. What a fantastic set of results!
