Year 5 Trip to the Science Centre

In term 5, to support our science learning about space, and to celebrate British Science Week 2019, year 5 went to The Observatory Science Centre.  We took part in a range of hands-on, practical science activities, saw a telescopes used by scientists to learn about space and even took part in a work shop creating robot arms, akin to those found on the International Space Station!

The Adventures of Odysseus

Our Power of Reading core text for the term is ‘The Adventures of Odysseus’ inspired by Homer’s Odyssey.  Along with our reading lessons, we will be exploring the genre of myths and legends, as well as stories from other cultures.  Through this we will continue to teach grammar, spelling, punctuation and features of language.  Nightly reading at home, either alone or aloud to someone else, is encouraged, as is borrowing books from the classroom to take home.

Over the term, we will be looking at volume and capacity – expanding upon our Term 5 learning about space and measure.  We will also learn about Roman Numerals, as well as further develop core arithmetic skills through deeper reasoning and problem solving. Children will be taught in mixed groups across the year group.

Linking to our Power of Reading text, we will be learning about the Ancient Greeks.  Our learning over the term, will help us answer our focus question: ‘Were the Ancient Greeks the most important society in history?’  We will be looking at Greek democracy, wars and great thinkers and learning about their influence on society today.

The topic for Term 6 is ‘Living Things and Their Habitats’.  We will be doing long term observations over time involving our classroom plants and taking part in a range of activities to help us understand the life cycles of a range of animals, as well as looking at how plants reproduce, depending on the habitats they are in.

We will continue our work from Term 5 and explore how the Internet and the World Wide Web work.  We will also continue our on-going learning surrounding on-line safety and we will be looking at curating a safe and appropriate digital footprint.

The unit for the term in R.E. is ‘Is it better to express your beliefs in arts and architecture or charity and generosity?’  We will examine the concept of tithing and learn about the Muslim practice of Zakat – charitable giving.  We will also examine how our religious beliefs shape the buildings and art that we surround ourselves with.

We will be examining conflict within friendships and also discussing some of the moral issues thrown up by our core text about Odysseus’ treatment of his foes!

The children will be using the Euro Stars programme to learn and practise new vocabulary in lots of different ways to build their confidence in French.  This term our unit is ‘Les Planetes’, and we will be learning vocabulary to do with space whilst focusing on developing our knowledge of sentence structure.

We will be learning tennis and athletics. Please ensure that a full PE kit is in school every day as our timetable for PE lessons can vary on a weekly basis. Year 5 children will continue to participate in Forest School sessions during the term on Friday afternoons, these are led by Mr Gillinder, a specialist forest school teacher.

Art and D.T.

Our focus is food technology and cooking, we will be working to a brief, inspired by our core text, The Adventures of Odysseus, examining nutrition, learning about seasonality and making some delicious food.

Our theme for the term will be ‘Celebration’ and we will be learning about the techniques singers and choirs use to sing in harmony.
