Southborough Church of England Primary School

Reception 2020

Welcome to Reception

We are delighted that your child is joining our school and we look forward to getting to know you and your child and working together in partnership. Southborough is a welcoming, exciting and successful school and we hope your child will quickly feel happy, confident and secure in their new environment.

This page of our website has been written for the parents and carers of new Reception children. It aims to answer some of the questions you may have so that you too will feel confident and well prepared when your child starts school.

Please share this social story with your child to help prepare them for the first day of school.

Your Child’s Learning Journey at Southborough

During the first few weeks of school we aim to provide a secure and comforting environment that is similar to a pre-school or nursery setting.  There will be free play, but we will begin to gently introduce the rules and routines to enable us to move on to adult led teaching for our core subjects in maths, phonics, English and STEM.

Our short, teacher-led sessions, build up the children’s excitement for the learning focus, and introduce the key details.  We then carry this learning into our ‘Plan-do-review’ sessions, where your child will choose their learning activity based on their interests and then share their learning with others.  The ever changing activities they can choose from consolidate and build on the teacher led learning.  The learning is very active and takes place in our classrooms and our outdoor areas. We do this every day and in all weathers!

We teach reading and writing through our phonics scheme: Read, Write, Inc., from the middle of the first term, and further details of this will be given at our curriculum meeting in October.  You may also want to explore this website for further details.

Each term we also explore a book using the Power of Reading scheme.  This allows us to delve into a book in more detail and link other areas of our learning to the themes.  The video shows you how exciting and engaging this makes our learning during a year in Reception.
