At Southborough, children participate regularly in P.E. lessons to promote healthy physical development through the acquisition of specific sporting skills, team work skills, co-operation and confidence, with the additional benefits of physical exercise on our physical and mental health and well-being. These P.E. lessons include dance, team and field sports, gymnastics and swimming. Through these lessons, we aim to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in sport and other physically demanding activities.
The National Curriculum aims for all pupils to:
develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
are physically active for sustained periods of time
engage in competitive sports and activities
lead healthy, active lives
Children take part in 2 hours of Physical Education, and on top of this, staff aim to ensure that physical activity is a part of many lessons, not just P.E. Swimming is a compulsory part of the curriculum, and years 4 and 5 take part in regular swimming lessons.
Class teachers deliver P.E., but children and staff also benefit from specialist sports coaches who come into the school to deliver P.E. lessons to children, enhancing teaching staff’s knowledge of delivering quality sports and allowing the children to have P.E. provision of the highest quality.
All children as expected to take part in P.E. lessons (unless there are special grounds for exclusion – please send a note to your child’s class teacher if this is the case), and as a result, lessons and activities are designed to be accessible for all pupils to enter into. In line with Southborough’s SEN Policy, and ethos all children are able to engage with lessons through quality first teaching, well planned and structures lessons and high quality resources allow for children of a range of experiences and strengths to take part in lessons and excel.
All children are given the chance to participate in extra-curricular clubs to develop their range of skills and interests. These clubs include football, hockey, dance, netball, athletics and cross-country running.
The learning climate and culture at Southborough gives all children the chance to develop and embrace British and Christian values. P.E. offers children the chance to develop an understanding of perseverance, tolerance and mutual respect. P.E. at Southborough, fosters an environment of teamwork, confidence, independence and a sense of fair and generous behaviour or treatment of others.
Children at Southborough are also given the opportunity to take part in a range of sporting fixtures including league matches, sporting festivals and one off fixtures. We have football and netball teams, and gymnastisc squad, a dance squad as well as a team of children taking part in a Change4Life event, encouraging all children to enage with physical activity. We also have a sports day in the Summer term allowing all children a chance to engage.
