The Year 6 Team

NSPCC online safety and mental health awareness –

recommended parent and child activity for half term.

Although we typically don’t set home learning over half term (apart from continuing to read and to practise tables/bonds), we are keen to share an invaluable resource to support you as parents to help your child’s mental health and online safety awareness.

NSPCC have recently launched their ‘Positively Online Campaign’, with content supporting parents to help their children navigate the online world. It includes six top tips, two videos and a great quiz that families can take together.

The idea is to get parents talking to their children about their online wellbeing and what we can all do to feel more positive when using the internet. Class teachers will follow up on this during class online safety and PSHE lessons in Term 6.

Links to resources, tips and the quiz can be found here: NSPCC online wellbeing and positivity

The family online quiz can be found here: https://www.nspcc.org.uk/keeping-children-safe/online-safety/online-wellbeing/positively-online/quiz/

Home Learning

Home learning will be set on Thursday and will be due the following Tuesday.

Spelling

We will be checking the children’s knowledge of the spellings next week on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Please see the groups and this week’s spelling strategy below:

Music Home learning

Children have recently been given a copy of their Music Knowledge Organiser; you can also download a PDF copy (attached).

To compliment class work and further develop musical knowledge and skills, children should be discussing their Knowledge Organiser at home and talking about the music they are listening to in school and at home. Miss Garrioch (our specialist music teacher) suggests that across the week children spend about 30 minutes on this – that could be just 5 minutes a day listening to a song on the car radio and using musical vocabulary to comment on pitch, rhythm and the genre of music. Knowledge Organisers summarise key music curriculum information including, musical terms, technical definitions as well as topic specific content.

Please ask your child what they’re learning about this week in music and help them remember 1 or 2 related facts from the Knowledge Organiser. You could turn this into a family game, quizzing each other on what you’ve discussed. Support at home will be a massive help and aid children’s learning and musical knowledge.

At the start of each music lesson, children will share what they’ve discussed at home and will talk about their favourite song or piece of music and make links to their musical knowledge.

At the end of each short term there will be quizzes (based on the Knowledge Organiser) in class as part of our ongoing assessment in music.

Reading

Children in Year 6 should be reading for 30 minutes a day. This should be a combination of reading to an adult or independently.

Parents please log your child's reading on the BOOM Reader Parent Portal or by using the BOOM reader parent app on your tablet/ mobile.

Click here for more information about how our school uses Boom Reader.

Children should bring their Accelerated Reader reading book and bookmark to and from school and home each day. Pupils are asked to change their book when it is finished using the guidance and support provided by the teaching team in each class.

Maths Fluency

We will be checking the children’s knowledge of the times tables or number bonds on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Please practise these questions at home:

Grammar and Punctuation

Home Learning folders will come home each Thursday and need to be returned the following Tuesday.

Topic Task

Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental Health Awareness Week is hosted every year by the Mental Health Foundation and will run from 15th May to 21th May 2023.

This year's theme is anxiety. Its aim is getting as many people as possible to have conversations about mental health and the everyday things that can affect it.

Anxiety is a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can be experienced by anyone, including children.

Here are some suggestions which you could do at home to help create a calmer environment for you. We look forward to hearing what you get up to and would love to see some pictures!

  • Grow flowers, herbs, vegetables, or add greenery to your living space.
  • Spend time baking or cooking with a family member
  • Colouring – focus on an object to draw even better do some colouring outside!
  • Make a mind jar
      • A mind jar is something you can hold and shake when you feel the need to calm down and take your mind off of what bothers you.

Here’s what you need:

  • A mason jar (or a clear plastic container with a lid)
  • Glitter
  • Food Coloring
  • Water

Can you think of anymore?
